Dry Skin and How to Make it Radiant Again

Winter often leaves its mark on our skin: cold, dry heating air, and icy winds strip it of moisture and can make it appear rough, flaky, or irritated. But with the right skincare, you can strengthen the skin barrier and help it regain a fresh, healthy glow. In this article, you will learn which active ingredients are particularly important now.

Why does skin suffer in winter?

In winter, our skin tends to be dry because the outermost layer of skin, the epidermis, is less able to retain moisture. This is due to reduced blood circulation and decreased activity of the sebaceous glands, which produce fewer skin lipids during the cold season. As a result, the lipid film, which acts as a protective layer on the skin's surface, becomes more permeable and moisture is lost.

This natural water loss from the skin is called transepidermal water loss (TEWL). However, it is crucial that the outermost skin layer can store enough moisture to keep the skin supple and healthy.

Care for a strong skin barrier

When it comes to skincare, it is important to use creams with a high moisture content. To strengthen the skin barrier, creams should also contain the right mixture of natural, skin-identical fats and oils, rich in ceramides and phosphatidylcholine.

Ceramides play an important role in building the barrier by stabilizing the cells. Phosphatidylcholine is a special lipid from which our skin can form a whole range of ceramides. Phosphatidylcholine is also important because it stabilizes cell membranes, regulates skin moisture, has anti-inflammatory effects, and supports skin regeneration. At the same time, it is important that the skin is intensely supplied with bioactive skincare ingredients, essential, as well as skin-identical lipids and moisture.

The Creyan Nutri Active 24h Cream and the Creyan Regenerating Night Cream support the skin with plenty of moisture, natural lipids, and oils.

Why Serums Make a Difference

Serums are highly concentrated skincare products that penetrate deep into the skin and specifically target certain skin problems. Compared to classic creams, serums contain a higher concentration of active ingredients that are quickly absorbed by the skin. Especially for dry skin, moisturizing serums with hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and NMF factors (Natural Moisturizing Factors), which contain natural moisturizing factors such as amino acids, lactic acid, and salts, penetrate into the deeper skin layers and help to bind moisture there. Regular use of a serum can thus help to reduce dryness lines and give the skin a radiant, healthy appearance.

Intense Hydrating Serum

For optimal hydration, we recommend our bestseller, the Intense Hydrating Serum. This highly concentrated formulation combines hyaluronic acid, provitamin B5, Jiaogulan extract, and an NMF (natural moisturizing factor) complex for deep hydration and simultaneous soothing.

Lip and Hand Care

In winter, lips and hands are particularly sensitive. The skin on the lips is especially thin and has no sebaceous glands that could protect it from drying out. This often leads to chapped, cracked lips and fine lines.

Hands are also exposed to significant stress: the cold slows down blood circulation, making the skin even more susceptible to dryness. In addition, frequent washing and the lack of protective lipids weaken the skin barrier, which can lead to rough, cracked skin. Without adequate protection, wrinkles and fine lines on hands and lips become visible more quickly.

Additional tips for everyday life

Drink plenty of fluids

Even if you care for your skin externally, it is important to support it from within as well. Drink enough water to hydrate your skin and give it a fresh, healthy appearance. The recommended guideline is approximately 1.5 to 2 liters of water per day – depending on your body weight and activity level. If you find it difficult to drink enough, unsweetened herbal teas or water with a squeeze of lemon or a few cucumber slices can also be a tasty alternative. Good hydration not only contributes to more supple skin but also helps prevent dehydration lines and strengthens the skin barrier.

Adjust diet

What you eat also influences the health of your skin. A balanced diet, rich in healthy fats, vitamins, and antioxidants, can support the skin from the inside out. Particularly important are omega-3 fatty acids (found in fish, flaxseed, walnuts) and vitamin E (e.g., in nuts, seeds, and green leafy vegetables). These nutrients strengthen the skin barrier and help retain moisture.

Mind the indoor climate

Especially in the colder months, heating systems can severely dry out indoor air, which also harms your skin. Air that is too dry extracts moisture from the skin and leads to feelings of tightness and dryness. A simple way to counteract this is to use a humidifier to increase humidity. If you don't have a humidifier, you can also simply place damp towels on the heater or regularly open the window to let in fresh air.

Reduce stress

Stress can affect not only your mind but also your skin. It can weaken the skin barrier and make the skin more susceptible to dryness and irritation. Find methods that help you relieve stress, such as regular exercise, meditation, or breathing exercises. Even short breaks during the day can help relax the nervous system and help the skin regenerate.

Sun protection even in winter weather

Even on cloudy winter days or in cold weather, UV protection is important for the skin. UV rays can dehydrate the skin and damage its protective barrier. Make sure to use a day cream with SPF, such as our Daily Protection SPF30, to protect the skin from the sun's harmful effects. This is especially true for the sensitive skin on the face.
